Shilpa Ghurye is a Senior IP Attorney at Kearney, McWilliams & Davis, PLLC. She is a USPTO Registered Patent Attorney and has extensive experience in helping private entities, startups, public institutions, non-profit organizations, and universities in matters related to Intellectual Property Law. She also has experience in helping non-profit organizations and public hospital systems in matters related to Healthcare Law. Her practice area is focused on patent prosecution and litigation, technology commercialization, trademark registration, and healthcare related matters. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Biochemistry and Master of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Bombay, India. She also received her Ph.D. in Immunology from UT-Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and UT-M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in 2003 and her J.D. from South Texas College of Law in 2011.

Shilpa’s intellectual property experience stems from her previous employment (Adler and Associates and Kearney, McWilliams & Davis, PLLC), academia (William Marsh Rice University’s Technology Transfer Office and University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering), and with a government entity (Harris County Attorney’s Office-Hospital District Division (Harris Health System)). Her experience includes identifying patentable subject matter, prosecuting patents within the United States Patent and Trademark Office, filing worldwide patent applications, formulating comprehensive strategies for technology commercialization, and trademark registration and enforcement. Her healthcare experience stems from her employment with Harris Health System and as a Healthcare Policy Officer, Advisory Board member, and President of a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that helps cancer patients in the South Asian community and their caregivers (Indian American Cancer Network, IACAN).

At the University of Houston, Shilpa guest lectured on Intellectual property in the Cullen College of Engineering, hosted a career workshop on Intellectual Property law in collaboration with the UH law center and moderated a seminar on patent filing trends and resources for innovators and entrepreneurs in collaboration with UH law center and the USPTO, and organized a seminar on startup in collaboration with the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems. She also participated in the Innovators Network and Innov8 Hub program at the UH Technology Bridge.

Shilpa is currently serving as President of IACAN. She also volunteers to grade student briefs for moot court competitions organized by the Houston Intellectual Property Law Association (HIPLA) and is the chair of HIPLA's scholarship committee.

In her free time, Shilpa also enjoys performing at various regional cultural events with the Houston Maharashtra Mandal’s Dhol Tasha group.

Shilpa Ghurye is licensed to practice law in the State of Texas, in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas, U.S. Eastern District of Texas, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
